Classic Melee stages returning in Smash Bros. Brawl

Players intimidated by the chaotic, hazard-heavy stages of Super Smash Bros. Brawl will be delighted to hear that several classic stages will be returning from Smash Bros. Melee. Pictured above, the Temple stage is the only one officially announced, though director Masahiro Sakurai promises "a number" of stages from the Gamecube title (a few of the original N64 states couldn't hurt either, but there's no word on whether or not that's even a possibility).

In other news, next Monday is December 3, otherwise known as the former release date of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. As this date has been slowly approaching, we here at Joystiq have noticed that the daily Brawl updates have lacked any startling new information. The last character announced was back in October, meaning that Brawl's blog is definitely overdue for some earth-shattering information. Perhaps Nintendo is holding off to make an announcement on the day we all expected to get our Brawl on? Maybe, maybe not. We'll just have to wait and see what happens.

This is pretty cool alot of the old stages were really awesome. This game already has so many features.

Well how could it be to port levels from the GCN. The Wii is afterall just two Gamecube's duct taped together, amirite?

But honestly, I loved the temple level, possibly one of my favorites from the Melee. I also liked the Pokemon Stadium level, not sure why, it just was a minimal stage and sometimes I like minimal.

That's a pretty good prediction. They could either do that, or they could release it around Brawl's ship date like they did Super Metroid for Prime3.

I can't see any reason why they wouldn't be able to place all of the old stages in Brawl, from a technical standpoint.

Aside from the fact the architecture of Wii being the same as GameCube (making porting code and assets a breeze), the disc size is MUCH larger this time around.
GameCube discs maxed out at 1.5GB. The Wii uses standard-sized, dual-layer DVDs. We're looking at roughly 5-6 times the disc space of the GameCube version.

So, I wouldn't be surprised if all N64 and GameCube stages made it into Brawl. The entire cast of Melee is just as likely to return, too (and before you bring it up, those "comments" from Sakurai about some characters not returning were false rumors spread around).

I'll be quite sad if even one character is missing from Melee. I think you're absolutely right - disc space isn't a problem. They've probably found some improved ways to compress their models as well.

As long as Pichu and Young Link are out, I'm fine with the rest of the cast, as those characters were useless clones (but Pichu was the most useless one. Young Link was fun, but still =/).

Now, if Falco is kicked out of the SSBB cast, I'm going to be a sad, sad panda...

Pichu is an interesting challenge to play as.

Falco's dull, though. But then again, so is Fox.

A character that is fast is a sexy character indeed. I have to agree with what you said about Young Link, but unfortunately he was a clone nonetheless, so I have this feeling he will get the axe.

Pichu, on the other hand, was worthless. Yes, he was faster than Pikachu, but he damaged with almost every attack he made, mostly if it was electrical. He's going to get the axe for sure.

As for Falco, he was my main. He was fast as Fox, and his attacks packed more punch than Fox's, but had a little more delay. Still, he was the best character I could play with, and I'm praying to God that he makes it back, with a fresh moveset this time.

I gotta stick up for young link - he had better projectiles, and a much less "cheap" up special. He's fun to use at times.

Pichu was fun since he/she/it was actually strong and fast, and a challenge to use as was stated before. But yea, now that I think about it, if I had to pick one, Pichu would be out.

I always preferred Falco over Fox.

So... Melee stages are bad. This week's update was the most epic of them all, as it opens many brackets of which stages are going to be back from Melee, and maybe, just maybe, from the first SSB.

So Sakurai, would you kindly bring back my Flat Zone?

I seriously hope they bring back Big Blue. That stage was balls-to-the-wall nuts. There's a lot of old stages to pick from, though, so the chances are probably a bit slim.

Me and my room mates still play the original on N64. One of the best games ever made IMO, and Melee just didn't do it for me. So much more skill is involved with the N64 version (w/minimal items) and Melee's levels aren't "plain" enough.

Pokemon level, Links Castle, and Fox's ship are on constant rotation.
